What is a microchip and how does it work?
A microchip is a tiny computer chip which has an identification number programmed into it. The chip is encased in a strong bio-compatible glass, and is small enough to fit into a hypodermic needle. Once the chip has been implanted, the unique number can identify your pet throughout your life. This identification cannot be lost, altered, or removed.
A special scanner is used to send a radio signal through the skin of the animal to read the chip. The animal feels nothing as the scanner is passed over him and the chip is read. The microchip number is then relayed to the scanner where it is displayed.
How long does the microchip last?
The microchip itself has no power supply to replace or moving parts to wear out, and therefore it can be expected to last for decades.
Why should I get my pet microchipped?
Microchips provide a permanent, non-changeable or removable means of identification that will not be lost over time, as can occur with tags and tattoos. Owner information is immediately accessible, ensuring the rapid return of a lost pet, avoiding delays, which can be found with other methods of identification.
Remember - in the UK it is also a requirement that your dog wears a tag bearing your address details.
Does my pet have to be sedated for the injection?
No, injecting the microchip is just like any other injection or vaccination. However, we can microchip your pet under general anaesthetic at the time of their neutering operation at a discounted fee.
At what age should I have my pet microchipped?
The benefits of the system are relevant to all stages of your pet’s life, and we recommend that puppies and kittens are at least 8 weeks old, with no upper age limit for adult pets. Many owners request that their pet is microchipped at the time of their primary vaccination course, or at the time of their neutering operation – this can be done at a discounted fee.
Could my pet be allergic to the AVID MicroChip?
The AVID MicroChip is inert and biocompatible. There is virtually no chance of the body developing an allergy or trying to reject the MicroChip after being properly implanted.
